Thermal Residue Fingerprinting: A Revolutionary Approach to Develop a Selective Cleaning Solution
During the last 5 years, the processes to remove flux residues especially for lead-free and challenging geometries have demonstrated new cleaning obstacles which have to be overcome. A new methodology has been recently developed to further increase the propensity for successful cleaning. At the core of this method is the thermal identification of the residue matrix. Thermal energy changes the physical state, i.e. transitions between liquid, solid and gas phases. By taking advantage of such specific information during phase transitions, the cleaning process can be tailored to such settings, which in turn increases the cleaning success significantly.

The Trace Analytical Team consists of Biologists, Chemists, Electronic Engineers, Metallurgical Engineers, Physicists, and members of other disciplines. This team, in combination with advanced instrumentation techniques, is able to diagnose and provide solutions for a wide range of complex issues facing today's manufacturers, suppliers and OEM's. Furthermore, our experience with a variety of problems and solutions allows us, in many cases, to offer our clients a unique perspective into their problem. On-site sampling and consultation is available, as well as expert witness testimony, in some cases.

The analytical process includes analysis of the failed part along with control samples and in most cases, known good product. The Trace team then uses a variety of advanced instrumentation techniques, including X Ray, Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ion Chromatography (IC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA) and others to assist in determining the root cause of the problem. Once the cause is identified and confirmed, the team analyzes test results, field data, environmental simulation models and other factors necessary to provide conclusive solutions for preventing recurrence.
